ORGANIZATIONS

Health Level 7 (HL7)
Health Level Seven is an American National Standards Institute-accredited Standards Developing Organization operating in the healthcare arena. HL7's domain is clinical and administrative data, and its mission is: "To provide standards for the exchange, management and integration of data that support clinical patient care and the management, delivery and evaluation of healthcare services."

The Certification Commission on Healthcare Information Technology (CCHIT)
The mission of CCHIT is to accelerate the adoption of robust, interoperable HIT throughout the US healthcare system, by creating an efficient, credible, sustainable mechanism for the certification of HIT products.

The National Alliance for Healthcare Information Technology
The National Alliance for Health Information Technology is working to shape the policy environment and accelerate the implementation of world-class, standards-based IT aimed at creating the most effective, safe, unified and inclusive health system possible.

National Council for Prescription Drug Programs (NCPDP)
NCPDP, an ANSI-Accredited Standards Development Organization, creates and promotes standards for the transfer of data to and from the pharmacy services sector of the healthcare industry.

The Commission on Systemic Interoperability, authorized by the Medicare Modernization Act and under the U.S. National Library of Medicine, National Institute of Health, is developing a strategy to make healthcare information instantly accessible at all times, by consumers and their healthcare providers.

National Committee on Vital and Health Statistics

Object Management Group (OMG)
OMG is an open membership corsortium that produces and maintains computer industry specifications for interoperable enterprise applications. Its flagship specification is the multi-platform Model Driven Architecture.

The Electronic Authentication Partnership (EAP)
EAP is the multi-industry partnership working on the vital task of enabling interoperability among public and private electronic authentication (e-authentication) systems.

CORBAMed Patient Identification Service (PIDS)
CORBAMed is the healthcare division of the Object Management Group (OMG). OMG is an industry consortium for promoting the applications of Object Oriented Technologies. CORBA stands for Common Object Request Broker Architecture. It is the industry standard for object-oriented interoperability among disparate computer systems.

FHOP's Core Data Element-Based Patient Identification
The University of California, San Francisco Family Health Outcomes Project (FHOP) recommends the use of standard data sets for the identification of patient information. FHOP is part of the Department of Family and Community Medicine and is affiliated with the Institute of Health Policy Studies in California. FHOP has opted for data standardization and unique client identification instead of establishing a unique client ID.

INITIATIVES, STANDARDS AND ARCHITECTURE

Integrating the Healthcare Enterprise (IHE)
IHE is a multi-year initiative that creates the framework for passing vital health information seamlessly-from application to application, system to system, and setting to setting-across the entire healthcare enterprise. IHE is a collaborative effort between HIMSS and the Radiological Society of North America, with the American College of Cardiology as a sponsor.

Veterans Health Information Systems and Technology Architecture (VISTA)
VISTA is an automated environment that supports day-to-day operations at local Department of Veterans Affairs health care facilities. It is built on a client-server architecture, which ties together workstations and personal computers with graphical user interfaces at Veterans Health Administration facilities.

The Public Health Information Network (PHIN)
PHIN is the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's vision for advancing fully capable and interoperable information systems in the many organizations that participate in public health. PHIN is a national initiative to implement a multi-organizational business and technical architecture for public health information.

Healthcare Information Exchange and Interoperability (HIEI)
The Center for Information Technology Leadership's HIEI is technology that enables the electronic flow of information among medical organizations.

ATP Focused Program: Information Infrastructure for Healthcare
The National Institute for Standards and Technology's Advanced Technology Program Information Infrastructure for Healthcare has a program that develops technologies to form the foundation of a private-sector-driven, nationwide information system, including tools for enterprise integration, domain identification and business process modeling.

Federal Information Processing Standards (FIPS)
The Secretary of Commerce approves standards and guidelines that are developed by the National Institute of Standards and Technology for Federal computer systems. These standards and guidelines are issued by NIST as Federal Information Processing Standards (FIPS) for use government-wide. NIST develops FIPS when there are compelling Federal government requirements such as for security and interoperability and there are no acceptable industry standards or solutions.

Developing a Prototype for a Nationwide Health Information Network Architecture
The Department of Health and Human Services, Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology, has a requirement to develop prototypes for a Nationwide Health Information Network Architecture.

Evaluation of Standards Harmonization Process for Health Information Technology
The Department of Health and Human Services, Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology has a requirement to develop, prototype and evaluate the feasibility and effectiveness of a process to harmonize standards to support widespread interoperability among healthcare software applications, particularly electronic health record systems.

Evaluation of Compliance Certification and Inspection Process for Health Information Technology
The Department of Health and Human Services, Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology, has a requirement to develop, prototype and evaluate the feasibility and effectiveness of an electronic health record compliance certification and inspection process, including the infrastructure components through which electronic health records interoperate.
