The Business Case:
Key Resources
Many public and private agencies provide funding for health information exchange initiatives. Via government agencies such as the Office of the National Coordinator of Health Information Technology to the U.S. Department of Defense's Telemedicine & Advanced Technology Research Center, the federal government is already a major funder and supporter of NHIN-related projects.
Health and Human Services Secretary Michael Leavitt has stressed, however, that the NHIN will be a public-private venture. Foundations such as the Markle Foundation, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the California HealthCare Foundation are now providing financial support for research and demonstration projects that could lead to advances in the development of a nationwide health information network.
