Weight Loss Supplement Label & Refund Checklist

posted on October 22, 2026

Before you pay for a weight-loss supplement, check the exact label, seller, delivered total, renewal terms and refund rules—not just the headline claim. This checklist helps you decide whether to buy, pause, ask a pharmacist or clinician, or keep the records needed to get your money back.

The limit is simple: an ingredient study or a quality document cannot tell you that the specific bottle in your cart will produce a weight result or suit you personally. The NIH weight-loss supplement guide, updated May 18, 2022, says evidence for many ingredients is limited, inconsistent or small.

Printable checklist: confirm the exact product and seller

  • □ Save the product-page URL, date, screenshots and checkout screen.
  • □ Record the brand, exact product name, variant, route, pack count or net quantity, and flavor where relevant.
  • □ Record the seller name shown at checkout, not only a marketplace listing name or ad account.
  • □ Match the Supplement Facts panel, front label and product name. A similar name, bottle image or logo can belong to a different listing.
  • □ Check whether the listing is in stock and whether the product shown is the product that will ship.
  • □ Save the seller’s support contact and return instructions before placing the order.

Look-alike listings make this first step worth doing. If the seller, label and checkout do not clearly match, pause rather than treating the ad as the product record.

How do I read the Supplement Facts label?

Read the serving basis first. One serving may be more than one capsule or gummy, so a number on the front of the bottle may not be the amount in one unit.

Check Write down Why it matters
Serving size Capsules, gummies or scoops per stated serving It keeps per-unit and per-serving amounts from being confused.
Servings per container Total stated servings It helps you compare packages without assuming a bottle lasts a certain time.
Each ingredient Name, form and amount per serving Ingredient research applies only to the ingredient, formulation and outcome actually studied.
Proprietary blend Total blend amount and every ingredient named You cannot see each ingredient’s amount from a blend total.
Caffeine sources Listed caffeine plus tea, guarana or other stimulant sources An unknown amount inside a blend leaves the total caffeine unresolved.
Lot and expiration Lot or batch number and expiration date These details help match a bottle to any testing document or refund request.

Do not convert milligrams into a personal plan. If an amount, serving basis or stimulant total is unclear, ask the seller for the current label before ordering and take that label to a pharmacist or clinician if you need individual guidance.

What do ingredient studies really tell you?

Keep a product claim separate from the evidence behind an ingredient. A 2023 network meta-analysis of 111 randomized trials found small, low-certainty average weight effects for green tea and glucomannan; those are ingredient-class findings, not comparisons of bottles on sale today. The 2023 nutraceutical review also covered varied formulations, durations and accompanying diet interventions.

For a more concrete example, a 2013 eight-week glucomannan trial randomized 53 adults and 47 finished; weight change was not significantly different from placebo. That is useful context for a glucomannan claim, but it is not a verdict on another finished blend. For a clear explanation of what ingredient trials do not prove, compare the exact formulation on the label with the product studied.

If your actual need is weight, blood-sugar or gut-health information rather than a checkout decision, this site’s weight and gut health guide is a useful next read.

What does a COA or third-party seal prove?

A certificate of analysis, or COA, can be useful when it identifies the issuing laboratory, report date and number, the tested lot, sample source, methods, units, analytes, detection limits and pass criteria. A third-party seal can also be a lead worth checking directly with the named program.

Neither one answers every buyer question. It does not show that the finished product causes weight loss, that the document applies to the bottle you receive, or that the product is right for you. Match the lot number on the COA to the bottle and ask what the test actually covered. A generic laboratory logo, ISO statement or seller-uploaded report is not the same as a current-lot match.

Should I check FDA warnings before buying?

Yes. Search the FDA weight-loss product notifications for the exact product and seller name. FDA warns that products marketed as diet pills, fat-burning pills, supplements and teas may contain dangerous hidden ingredients, and its alert list cannot identify every contaminated product. Being absent from the list is not a safety clearance.

For suspected poisoning or serious symptoms, use Poison Control right away; do not wait for a seller reply or refund decision.

What will I really pay?

Before submitting payment, make one complete record of the delivered total: product price, currency, quantity, discount, shipping, tax and any fee. Prices and bundles change, so check the checkout for today’s total.

  • □ Is this a one-time purchase or an auto-ship order?
  • □ What is the renewal interval and renewal price?
  • □ Is the discount tied to a subscription?
  • □ Where is the cancellation control: account page, email, phone or support form?
  • □ Does checkout show tax and shipping before payment?
  • □ Are multi-bottle packs separate purchases, a recurring plan, or both?

Do not treat a crossed-out price or bundle badge as proof of savings. The receipt and checkout total are the records that matter if you need to cancel or dispute a charge.

How do I check the money-back terms?

Read the return policy before paying and save a copy. “Money-back guarantee” can still depend on timing, unopened bottles, a return authorization, return shipping or deductions.

Refund question Record before payment
Deadline Number of days and whether the clock starts at order, delivery or another date.
Opened bottles Whether opened, used or partially used items qualify.
Deductions Shipping, handling, restocking or promotional-item deductions.
Return method Authorization requirement, address supplied by the seller and tracking requirement.
Cancellation How to stop future shipments and whether cancellation must happen before a stated renewal date.
Refund timing How the seller says the refund will be issued and any stated processing period.

If any answer matters to your decision, get it in writing from the seller before you order. For another product-specific example of price, safety and refund questions, see the willow glp-1 scam watch.

What should I keep after I pay?

  • □ Order confirmation, receipt and payment confirmation.
  • □ Screenshots of the product page, checkout, subscription terms and return policy.
  • □ Photos of the unopened package, label, Supplement Facts panel, lot number and expiration date.
  • □ Shipping tracking, delivery confirmation and all support messages.
  • □ Cancellation and return-request confirmations.
  • □ Return authorization, carrier receipt and tracking proof if you send anything back.

Keep these together until the charge, any cancellation and any refund are fully resolved.

What if the seller refuses my refund?

Use the seller’s stated return process first and keep the written response. If the issue remains unresolved, contact the card issuer or payment provider promptly and ask what its dispute process requires; provide the saved order, policy, cancellation and shipping records. You can also file a report with the Federal Trade Commission and the consumer-protection office that serves your location.

Before you order: make the next step small

  • □ Buy only after the exact label, seller, delivered total, renewal terms and refund route are clear.
  • □ Choose no purchase if the label or terms leave a decision-critical question unanswered.
  • □ Bring the current label and your question to a pharmacist or clinician if you want help comparing it with your existing care.
  • □ If you already paid, save the records above and start the written cancellation or refund route now.
